Waiting for rains

A woman at a parched paddy field at Rajapathar, some 83 km from Diphu, district headquarter of Karbi Anglong district, on June 28, 2009. During the period between May 25 and June 19 this year, according to the Regional Meterological Centre at Guwahati, Meghalaya recorded a deficit rainfall of 75% - the highest. Nagaland is not far behind a deficit rainfall of 60%. Assam recorded 31% deficit rainfall, Arunachal Pradesh 35%, Manipur 38%, Mizoram 36% and Tripura 21% during this period marking the first 25 days of the current monsoon season.

Resumption of services

Commuters at Lower Haflong railway station in North Cachar Hills district of Assam on June 26, 2009. Train services in the 184 km route between Lumding and Badarpur resumed on June 25 after a period of three months. In all, 81 people (including 22 security personnel) have been killed in 52 attacks on trains (both passenger and goods) by militants between March 2006 and May 2009 in North Cachar Hills district.
